8x8 summary.

The world of UO is laid down on a grid. Each cell of the grid is 8 tiles by 8 tiles and is called a "resource square". One tile is the space your character stands on. So if you were to walk one spot, you have jsut walked one tile. You can (more importantly) say "Forward one" and "back one" on a boat to move one tile. Say either eight times and you have moved to a new resource square". Read this a few times if it does not make sense.

Some skills are movement-based which means the "anti-macro" code was designed to reward you if you moved your character around Britannia instead of just standing in the same spot. Some examples of movement-based skills are: Music, Peacemaking, Meditaion, Magery, Evaluate Intelligence, Healing, Veterinary and some others. One of the defects (features?) of the movement anti-macro code is that if you gain for any of the above skills in one resource square, then you will also gain in the next resource square to the North. This allows you to "find a gain", move one resource square to the North and find another. If you do this repeatedly it is called "finding a run". That is the basic idea to 8x8ing, but ther are tricks to ensure you get the most out of a run as it is rare that a single run will take you all the way to GM.

For instance, you only gain on successful attempts now, so even if you have gained from a resource square to the south, you will have to use a skill successfully on your current square before you will gain. You may have to succeed a few times to get your gain, so don't give up on a run just because you have failed to gain a point until you have used a movement-based skill successfully at least ten times.

If you find that your run has, indeed, run out then go back sixteen tiles ("Back One" sixteen times on a boat) and try there. You will often restart a run that has seemed to run dry.

Why all this talk of boats? If you download UOAuto-Map, you will see that there are server lines that you can sail North/South and never hit land. By sailing on these, you can just let the boat go "Slow Forward" while you use the skill in which you are trying to gain. Once you get a "show real" gain, you can "Stop" the boat and move eight tiles forward (to a new resource square). Use the skill in this new resource square until you get a gain. Move forward eight tiles. See how it works?

You string together a series of gains much faster than you would if you were just running around and using the skill.

Other tricks to watch out for: some servers (Lake Austing, for instance) show a preference for having runs going *South* instead of North; You must have a chance to fail in order to gain now--that is why there are Magery guides (ie what spells you should cast at what level to gain); and certain skills will gain on the same North/South line--Magery, Evaluate Intelligence and Mediation, for instance, will often overlap (you will gain a point in more than just one of those skills in each of your resource squares).

There are more "techniques" that I will not go into here, but this can server to orient you to the concept of 8x8ing. I don't think it is an all-inclusive guide, but I hope that I have shed some light on one of the keys to powergaming.

Your humble servant,
Helicobacter

PS Nieves: Please consider using this as you 8x8 skill section until you can get something better to replace it.
